Databases are often used in frontend systems to capture the results of transactions (OLTP) and in the backend for data warehousing. In the past, relational databases have been used to broadly cover many different storage needs and every other system was built to depend on them. With today's data processing demands, those architectures have reached capacity limits, especially for high throughput and high volume use cases that we discuss in this book.
