The rule of law

How will the law work when they go to court? The attorneys research the law to find a case from prior court cases that might yield favorable results for their client. They then use that case's ruling as a precedent to win the current case for their client.

It is impossible to refer to the entirety of case history to prove their point. So, attorneys for both sides will use a rhetorical device, known to category theorists as the forgetful functor. The forgetful functor necessarily leaves behind some structure. It is very difficult to find a case from the past that is identical in every way to the case at hand.
