Decrypt, authenticate, charge flow diagram

We'll base our coding examples on the following flow diagram:

We'll be passing order data from stage to stage until the entire process has been completed. The order data can be transformed along the way, for example, when the Decrypt step converts the credit card number into plain text. We'll refer to each stage or step as a filter. In our example, each filter will receive one order from the upstream and send one order downstream. The flow is unidirectional. It starts at the data source and moves to the Decrypt filter, then to the Authenticate filter, and ends in the Charge Credit Card filter:
