5.3 Protocol Impacts from Uplink Carrier Aggregation
The uplink carrier aggregation MAC layer operation is illustrated in Figure 5.2. The scheduling functionality is operating based on the PUSCH allocations received in the downlink direction. The eNodeB scheduler bases the uplink scheduling decisions as in Release 8 on the SRS sent in the uplink on each of the uplink carriers along with the MAC layer buffer status reports. Additionally the scheduler needs to consider available power resources in terms of whether the UE has enough transmission power to manage transmission on two carriers simultaneously or whether one should stay with a single carrier transmission only. The UE MAC layer hides the carrier aggregation functionality from the RLC/PDCP layer and respectively in the uplink receiver side the eNodeB MAC layer combines the MAC PDUs to be a single stream for a given logical channel with reordering and RLC layer retransmissions as in Release 8, as described in Chapter 3.

The use of uplink carrier aggregation is not visible to the UE mobility measurements. The use of uplink carrier aggregation can continue in connection with the handover, if also the target cell supports it. Alternatively, it can be disabled with the RRC reconfiguration message in connection with the handover command.
