9.4 Architecture and Protocols
When relay standardization work started, 3GPP collected the architecture alternatives in [2]. Subsequently the enhancements to RRC and PDCP protocols were specified in [5, 6] and the enhancements to S1 and X2 interfaces in [7, 8]. These enhancements will be explained in the rest of this chapter.
9.4.1 Sub-frame Configuration with Relay Nodes
Three types of relay nodes have been defined:
- inband relays where the relay sub-frame configuration for the backhaul link is needed;
- outband relays where the relay sub-frame configuration is not needed; and
- inband relays with adequate isolation between the backhaul and access antenna and hence the relay sub-frame configuration is not needed.
The relay node needs to indicate to the donor eNodeB that it is a relay (in order to differentiate from a UE) and the need for the relay sub-frame configuration in the RRC Connection Setup Complete message, as shown in Figure 9.12. The relay sub-frame configuration is provided by the donor eNodeB via dedicated signalling together with the system information update. The relay node cannot apply the normal system information acquisition procedure like a normal UE because the relay node acts as eNodeB for its UEs and hence it has to perform the system information acquisition procedure for these UEs. Only the SystemInformationBlockType1 (SIB1) and SystemInformationBlockType2 (SIB2) need to be provided to the relay node via dedicated RRC signalling, and the system information ...
