6.1 Introduction
This chapter presents the LTE downlink MIMO enhancements included in Release 10 LTE specifications, as part of LTE-Advanced work to improve the performance and reach the LTE-Advanced requirements set in 3GPP, as well as the IMT-Advanced requirements by the ITU-R. First, an overview of the downlink MIMO enhancements over the Release 8 and 9 MIMO capabilities is presented. This chapter proceeds to cover the changes in the protocol side to enable the necessary signalling and then the physical layer impacts are presented. This chapter concludes with the downlink MIMO performance investigation and the expected implementation impacts.
