9.2 General Overview
The access link (Uu) between UE and relay node is based on Release 8 specifications. The backhaul link (Un) between relay node and the donor eNodeB has been standardized in Release 10 and reuses the protocols from the air interface (Uu). The radio protocols of the access link both for control plane and user plane are terminated at the relay node. The relay node looks like an eNodeB from UE perspective. Therefore, the relay node is backwards compatible and legacy Release 8 UEs can connect to Release 10 relay nodes. From the core network point of view, the relay node looks like an additional sector in the donor eNodeB. Similarly from a neighbouring eNodeB point of view, the UE looks as if it was connected directly to the donor eNodeB. The donor eNodeB acts as a proxy for the S1 and X2 interfaces relating to the Relay node, forwarding them towards core network and neighbour eNodeBs respectively. The architecture overview is shown in Figure 9.2 [3] and corresponds to the alternative two discussed in 3GPP [2].

The backhaul link has some enhancements compared to the access link [3]. The Radio Resource Control (RRC) layer [5] has the functionality to configure and reconfigure sub-frame configurations to adjust the resource split between backhaul and access links. The relay node can request a configuration from the ...
