You can also try different diodes. At a location that is relatively far from
AM transmitters, a BAT48 Schottky diode and an AA119 germanium diode
perform similarly. Nothing was audible when I used a 1N4148 silicon
diode, which was not a surprise, because of its higher threshold voltage.
With another type of Schottky diode, the 1N5817, nothing was audible—so
evidently not all Schottky diodes function interchangeably.
