6.11 CHAPTER SUMMARY

Creating computer systems embedded with “knowledge” or “intelligence”

has long been a major goal of researchers in the AI community. Many inter-

esting knowledge-based systems have been developed in the past few decades

for applications such as medical diagnosis, engineering troubleshooting, and

business decision making. Grounded on various AI-based learning tech-

niques, several approaches have been followed to acquire knowledge or iden-

tify patterns directly from examples or from databases for an automatic data
