Linguistic variables are variables whose values are not numbers but words
or phrases, as found in a sentence of natural language. Linguistic variables
are often used to embed fuzzy meaning into fuzzy queries. Since they carry
fuzzy meaning, the interpretation of any linguistic variable requires the iden-
tification and application of a fuzzy membership function such as those dis-
cussed in the previous section.
The specification of a linguistic variable involves primary terms, con-
