Smart home data can be collected by many different devices and sent to many different places. A smart meter, for example, may transmit data to a gateway that then relays it to the utility company for billing purposes. Emergent smart grid features such as demand response will enable the smart meter to collect and forward information from the home's individual appliances that consume electricity from the power grid.
