The product of most IoT systems is data, and system operators must be able to trust the veracity of the data that is used to make decisions or to command automated actions. Data streams are not simple. They are often complex, generated from multiple proprietary and third-party data sources, tagged with metadata at various points, and reduced and transformed over and over again.

In order to protect data, system designers must first know what type of data is being collected and managed within a system. Defining categories of data (for example, sensitive or nonsensitive) can help in determining the levels of protection that must be applied.
