Anhang A. Befehle dokumentieren und Workflows mit make erstellen
Das Programm make wurde 1976 entwickelt, um ausführbare Programme aus Quellcodedateien zu erstellen.Obwohl es ursprünglich zur Unterstützung der Programmierung in der Sprache C entwickelt wurde, ist es nicht auf diese Sprache oder gar auf die Aufgabe des Kompilierens von Code beschränkt. Laut Handbuch kann man es "zur Beschreibung jeder Aufgabe verwenden, bei der einige Dateien automatisch aus anderen aktualisiert werden müssen, wenn sich diese ändern". Das Programm make hat sich weit über seine Rolle als Build-Tool hinaus zu einem Workflow-System entwickelt.
Makefiles sind Rezepte
Wenn du den Befehl make aufrufst, sucht er im aktuellen Arbeitsverzeichnis nach einer Datei namens Makefile (oder makefile).Diese Datei enthält Rezepte, die einzelne Aktionen beschreiben, die zusammen eine bestimmte Ausgabe ergeben. Stell dir vor, ein Rezept für einen Zitronenbaiserkuchen besteht aus Schritten, die in einer bestimmten Reihenfolge und Kombination ausgeführt werden müssen. Ich muss zum Beispiel die Kruste, die Füllung und den Baiser separat herstellen und dann zusammensetzen und backen, bevor ich in den Genuss einer leckeren Leckerei komme. Ich kann mir das mit einem so genannten String-Diagramm vorstellen, wie in Abbildung A-1 dargestellt.
