Python3.2 まで、文字列オブジェクトの内部データ形式には、16 ビット形式と 32 ビット形式
の 2 種類があり、コンパイル時のオプションによって、どちらを使用するか選択する必要がありま
した。このため、あるプラットフォームでは
len(c) == 1
と長さが 1 となる文字でも、別の環境で
同じ文字の長さを求めると
len(c) == 2
となってしまう場合があり、問題となっていました。
Python3.3 以降では、内部コードとして UCS-4 を利用するように統一され、このような問題が
なくなりました。また、文字列オブジェクトのメモリ使用量が大きく削減され、アルファベットな
どの ASCII 文字だけからなる文字列の場合は、1 文字を格納するために 4 バイトが必要な UCS-4
ではなく、1 文字あたり 1 バイトの形式で保存する、などの改善が行われました。
