プログラミングを始めたばかりの頃は、繰り返し耳にするが、技術的に明確な意味があるのか、意味があるように見えるだけなのかよくわからない言葉が出てくる。ファイルやディレクトリはまさにそういう用語だが、技術的な意味がある。ファイルは何らかのファイルシステムに格納されたファイル名で参照できるバイトシーケンスである。ディレクトリはファイルやほかのディレクトリの集合体である。フォルダはディレクトリの同義語にあたる。コンピュータがグラフィカルユーザーインターフェイスを獲得した際に、ディレクトリの概念を親しみやすくするために考え出された。
ファイルシステムの多くは階層構造になっており、木にたとえられる場合が多い。しかし、現実のオフィスに木などない。サブフォルダが無限にネストするところを視覚的にイメージできなければ、フォルダのたとえは通用しない。
20.1 ファイル入出力
最も単純なタイプの永続ストレージは昔ながらのファイルである。フラットファイルと呼ばれることもある。ファイルからメモリに読み出し、メモリからファイルに書き込む。ファイルの読み書きは簡単に行える。ほかの多くの言語と同様にファイル操作はおなじみのUnixのファイル操作をモデルとしている。
20.1.1 open()による作成とオープン
次のような操作をする際にはあらかじめopen()関数でファイルを開く（オープンする）。
- 既存のファイルの読み出し
- 新しいファイルへの書き込み
- 既存のファイルへの追記
- 既存のファイルへの上書き（書き直し）
open()呼び出しに含まれる部品を簡単に説明する。
