9.1 DHCP
昔のネットワークでは、ネットワーク上で通信を行いたければ、機器に手作業でアドレスを割り当てる必要がありました。しかしネットワークが拡大するにつれ、この手作業の処理はたちまち面倒なものへとなっていきます。この問題を解決するために開発されたのが、ネットワークに接続した機器に自動的にアドレスを割り当てるBOOTP（Bootstrap Protocol）です。のちにBOOTPは、より洗練されたDHCP（Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol）によって置き換えられました。
DHCPは、DNSサーバやルータなどその他の重要なネットワーク情報のアドレス)を取得できるようにするアプリケーション層プロトコルです。今日のDHCPサーバのほとんどは、ネットワークのデフォルトゲートウェイやDNSサーバのアドレスといった情報もクライアントに提供しています。
9.1.1 DHCPパケットの構造
DHCPパケットは、非常に多くの情報をクライアントに提供します。DHCPパケット内には以下のフィールドがあります（図9-1）。
- オペコード（OpCode）
- パケットがDHCP要求かDHCP応答かを示します。
- ハードウェアタイプ
- ハードウェアアドレスのタイプ（10MBイーサネット、IEEE 802、ATMなど）。
- ハードウェアアドレス長
- ハードウェアアドレスのアドレス長。
