Form I-9 is required to be completed by employers within 72 hours of a new employee starting work. Though only two pages long, the form can be complicated, and mistakes are costly. Fines for using an expired Form I-9, incorrect completion, or failing to retain the document range from $110 to $20,130 per violation. For example, one business with fewer than 50 employees was fined $40,000 because they could not produce their employees' I-9 forms even though it was later found that they all were authorized to work in the United States.
