In 2015, U.S. retail giant Target closed their 133 stores in Canada. The headline-making liquidation cost the company billions of dollars and affected more than 17,000 workers. Of the top 10 U.S.-based retailers, at least three have failed in an international expansion attempt: Target in Canada, Walmart in Brazil, and Home Depot in China.
