In 1930 in Winter Haven, Florida, George Jenkins opened his first grocery market and named it Publix Food Store. As he grew as a leader and as a supermarket magnate, he sent the message to his employees that “Publix will be a little better— or not quite as good— because of you.” Backing this claim with the company's earnings, Jenkins went on to establish one of the largest employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs), with more than 177,000 active account holders to date.
