In this chapter we examined the Windows networking model with its hardware, protocol, and services layers. We then discussed networking hardware, including NICs, hubs, switches, routers, and servers with RAID technology. The Ethernet CSMA/CD half-duplex protocol operation was presented. The repeater function was explained. RAID technology operation was also presented. SOHO LAN cabling categories were described with emphasis on CAT-5 cabling, which is the most common SOHO LAN cabling. Windows client/server and peer-to-peer networking software was examined along with NetWare and Unix (Linux) software.
