Key Technical Terms

Cookie— A cookie is a small file placed on a user's hard drive by a Web site. Cookies store user passwords to Web sites, and they are also used to record and report a PC host user's Web link selections and other information to marketing organizations. This information is used to advertise specific products to that Web site user. Some cookies cause targeted pop-up or banner advertisements to appear on the PC host user's monitor.

Cracker— A cracker is a 13- to 45-year-old male whose entire social life consists of cracking program code, creating virus programs that corrupt Windows, or breaking into other people's PCs.
