Abstract

The insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) has become an integral part of the power electronic building block concept developed by the Navy and now used throughout the armed forces. The propulsion drive for electric warships uses IGBTs to allow replacing old hydraulic systems with electrical systems that are more reliable and easier to maintain. Aircraft carriers utilize IGBT-based motor drives for cargo doors and lifts. Railguns and aircraft launchers using electromagnetic propulsion require IGBTs for the high-voltage power supplies.
