39Search and the LinkedIn Algorithm
Everything you do on LinkedIn should be done with discoverability in mind because in our digital‐first world, if people can't find you, you don't exist.
Under the hood, LinkedIn runs on a sophisticated search algorithm. Your prospects use it every day—looking for vendors, experts, collaborators, and insights.
If your LinkedIn profile isn't optimized to be discovered when your ideal customer is actively looking, you're losing pipeline opportunities. If your content isn't visible in your target audience's feed, you're not just invisible—you're irrelevant.
The Two Algorithms at Play
LinkedIn runs on two powerful algorithms:
- Search: This drives what shows up in the LinkedIn search bar. It's relevance‐based, just like Google. It indexes your headline, About section, job titles, skills, hashtags, and even the text in your posts.
- Feed: This determines what shows up in users' home feeds. It's engagement‐driven, built to reward relevance, consistency, and time‐on‐post.
To win on LinkedIn, you must optimize for both. The objective is straightforward: Make it easy for people to find you.
But before we move forward, it's important to note that the search algorithm is always changing. You must stay current on those changes and make regular adjustments to optimize for search.
