Chapter 5How to Sell AI Upstream and Downstream Within Your Organization
Based on insights from an interview with Shawn Olds.
Interest in AI has surged since the launch of ChatGPT, which helped GenAI enter the mainstream of both society and the nonprofit sector. It's also disrupted traditional models of technology adoption. Gone are the days of enterprise technology licenses approved by the board and CEO. Now, anyone on your team can log in to GenAI platforms like Claude, Gemini, or ChatGPT and access them for free. But the data is clear: organizational adoption in the nonprofit sector is lagging behind individual use.
That means it's up to passionate evangelists like you to introduce the potential of AI to your organization. This is a bottom-up movement, and trailblazers not afraid to try the tech on for size are the ones driving progress. But many falling behind are scared, resistant to change. Guardrails are needed to protect sensitive data and client information, but somehow this must align with and even bolster a culture of innovation and experimentation. So, how do you walk all these lines and encourage the responsible adoption of AI and other technologies, while safeguarding your nonprofit and the community it serves? How do you build excitement within your organization and support a graceful, intentional transition to embracing a more tech-forward philosophy?
