The Ahoms
State Formation
- The Ahoms, members of the Shan branch of the Tai group, derived their name from their origins in a land called Tyai-Shan, after which they migrated to China in the 5th century CE.
- Following their stay in China, the Tai group, under the leadership of Sukapha, moved to Mungrimungram in Yunan due to a family dispute. In 1215, Sukapha left his homeland.
- Sukapha’s journey led him to the Patkai region, and by 1228, he reached the Brahmaputra valley, where he established the first capital of the Ahom dynasty at Charaideo in 1253.
- Sukapha employed a policy of peace and conciliation to subdue the Morans and Barahis in the region.
