Soil
Assam’s soils are rich in nitrogen and organic matter. The alluvial soil in the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys is fertile and supports year-round cultivation of cereals, pulses, oilseeds and more. Upper Assam’s well-drained, deep, acidic alluvial soils with phosphoric content are ideal for plantation. New alluvial soils near the Brahmaputra are suitable for oilseeds, pulses, and rabi crops while plains’ alluvium soil is great for rice and vegetable cultivation. Soils on upper hill slopes are perfect for horticulture.
