The Language Movement in Assam began during the Colonial Period when the British introduced Bengali in government schools and law courts in 1837.
This policy was opposed by intellectuals like Anandaram Dhekial Phukan, who argued for the distinctiveness of the Assamese language. American Baptist missionaries also opposed the imposition of Bengali in Assam. In 1873, Assamese was restored as the medium of instruction in schools and court language.
The Asomiya Bhasa Unnati Sadhini Sabha in 1888 played a significant role in the development of Assamese language and literature. The British Colonial Government encouraged Bengalispeaking Muslims from East Bengal to Assam.
