Some devices connect only over short distance communication protocols, such as Z-wave, ZigBee, and Bluetooth. In these scenarios, a field gateway is used to collect the data from these devices and perform protocol translation to enable secure bidirectional communication with the cloud end that is the IoT Hub.

Some additional features that Microsoft provides are:

  • Communication between devices and Azure IoT Hub, or between gateways and Azure IoT Hub, is secured through encryption technologies such as TLS and X.509 protocol as per industry standards.
  • Azure IoT Hub does not open any connections to the device. The device initiates all connections.
