5.1. Introduction
Previous chapters address the concepts of association and measures of association in 2 × 2 tables and association in 2 × r and s × 2 tables. This chapter extends these concepts to the general s × r table. The main difference from these earlier chapters is that scale of measurement is always a consideration; the statistics you choose depend on whether the rows and columns of the table are nominally or ordinally scaled. This is true for investigating whether association exists and for summarizing the degree of association. Section 5.2 addresses tests for association, and Section 5.4 addresses measures of association.
