Creating Conditional Formatting

Instead of using one of the built-in conditional formatting rules, you can create your own rules. The New Formatting Rule dialog box allows you to create rules based on different rule types, such as format all cells based on their values, or use a formula to determine which cells to format. After you select a rule type, you specify the rule criteria to trigger conditional formatting. Many of the rule types include the Format button, which opens the familiar Format Cells dialog box. You can specify number, font, border, and fill formatting options. For icon sets, you can mix and match icons for a custom look as well as hide them based on your criteria.
