The solution was a kind of overreaction – although the CORBA protocol didn't get dropped, the nice object-oriented mindset was gone. A single interface for each remote machine was designed to hide all of the previously exposed objects. You can name it the "facade pattern" if you want, but it also totally defeated the purpose of CORBA. It was somehow embarrassing, but it at least saved the project from becoming a shipwreck!
