A mobile device can be connected to different mobile network types (2G, 3G, 4G/LTE) or local networks such as WiFi or Bluetooth. These networks have different performance characteristics we must be aware of.
A WiFi connection has the biggest bandwidth and lowest battery costs of all those technologies, so we should try to use it for data transfers whenever possible, and we should decrease network activity if we switch from WiFi to the cellular network.
