IFilters
An IFilter is a component that extracts text and properties from documents for placement in the content index. IFilters are not a SharePoint-specific technology but rather a general platform technology from Microsoft. They are also used by the Windows Indexing Service, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, and Windows Desktop Search. The name IFilter stems from the main C++ interface of the same name. All filters must implement this interface in order to plug in to products relying on this technology to extract content from files.
