In this chapter we will contrast the traditional quality control approach with the Lean
approach, understand Lean quality tools such as poke yoke and jidoka, understand the
details of Technical Standard 16949, and review seven basic quality tools in Lean.
Quality control can mean different things to different people. Let’s consider the
APICS Dictionary, 12th edition definition: “e process of measuring quality con-
formance by comparing the actual with a standard for characteristic and acting on
the difference.”
Under traditional quality control, inspection of goods and services (checking to
