Exchange 2003 includes new features that improve the backup, restore, and recovery experience by making it both easier and faster. Exchange 2003 supports the Volume Shadow Copy Service in Windows 2003 and includes a new feature called Recovery Storage Groups. VSS enables you to take snapshots (i.e., exact copies) of a volume or file (such as an Exchange database) at a specific point in time. VSS works by combining three different components: requestors (the backup application), writers (Exchange), and providers (third-party drivers or the Windows NT Backup provider). VSS is new and evolving rapidly, so you should check with your hardware vendor and verify support for Exchange snapshots before leveraging this feature.
