Some things in the world just go better together: peanut butter and jelly; campfires and ghost stories; and my penny-pinching uncle’s favorite, buy one, get one free. Two more things that are perfectly suited for one another are objectives and key results. Objectives are aspirational and compelling statements of what you hope to achieve, but on their own, they’re really nothing more than wishful thinking. Only by adding a set of key results can you know whether you’ve made that dent in the universe represented by your chosen objective. You can’t have one without the other.
Key results flex their muscles primarily through the use of numbers, and there’s nothing like the sheer power of numbers to wash away any confusion or contradiction when it comes to determining whether you’ve nailed your objective, made it halfway there, or whiffed completely.
