Why Online Investing Hacks?

The term hacking has a bad reputation. Many people picture geeky kids breaking into systems and wreaking havoc with computers as their weapons. However, among people who write code, the term hack refers to a “quick-and-dirty” solution to a problem or a clever way to complete a task. It is very much a compliment to be called a hacker: you’re creative and have the technical wherewithal to get things done. But what could this possibly have to do with investing?

Knowing the key players in the online investment arena can provide a nucleus of tried and true financial web sites. They’re not going away (although they might change their names as MarketGuide.com a.k.a. Multex Investor a.k.a. Reuters Investor has done). These sites continually improve their offerings with cleaner interfaces, more powerful tools, and a regularly updated library of educational information. Sometimes, these sites “improve” by starting to charge for what once was free, but that doesn’t happen as often as you might think.

New investment features or brand-new web sites spring up every day. If you’ve been looking for a site with free long-term historical data or an online bond trading service that you like, the answer might be in this book or in tomorrow’s Google search.
