The most common response I get when I introduce people to eraser carving is a fear of the blades. “I did that in high school, and I cut myself so much!” is a repeated comment on the Internet and the reason why I only allow ages 14+ at my in-person workshops. Though I have that restriction, and have attendees sign a waiver, I don’t believe that this fear should hold us or our children back from exploring and creating. I have allowed both of my children to participate in eraser carving with me while supervised in my art studio and believe that learning to work with blades is an important lesson and skill.
