This is the hardest part of printmaking, and I am going to help you. I was recently sitting next to my college roommate at an art conference, watching a demonstration on relief design. Tears slowly gathered in her eyes as she tried to wrap her head around utilizing positive and negative space in relief art, and it was an absolute delight to witness. I still remember my one and only art class in college, and the way learning to think in positive and negative space was breaking my own brain until we did one activity that made it suddenly make sense.
