When constructing a DTD, it is possible to add additional information to the nodes by including variables known as attributes. These variables are linked to the name of the node and the values are assigned to them in the opening tag of that node. In this lesson, you learned the syntax of adding attributes as well as what the possible types are.
You also learned how to reference external resources, whether they be text or binary. When the resource is not text, it is necessary to define and use a NOTATION, an explanation to the XML processor that tells it what program to use to process it. We also briefly touched on the structure of a processing instruction.
