From a mathematical point of view, an elliptic curve is represented by the following equation, which describes a plane curve over a finite field (a field with a finite number of elements defined by an arbitrary prime number):

When domain parameters a and b vary, the elliptic curve takes different forms, as in the following diagram, in which the parameters take the values a = -1 and b = 1.
The following shows an elliptic curve with a = -1 and b = 1:
