As we saw in Chapter 1, Introducing Blockchain Security and Attack Vectors, the purpose of the consensus mechanism is to allow blockchain nodes to reach an agreement (consensus) on the current state of transactions. The consensus mechanism must also be fault tolerant; that is to say, it must be able to function even in the presence of malfunctioning or dishonest (also known as Byzantine) nodes. This requirement takes us back to the Byzantine failure problem, this time in the context of permissioned blockchains. As we said, in permissioned blockchains, we prefer to adopt an alternative consensus algorithm to PoW, to improve performance and reduce energy impact.
