The uses of cryptography (especially the functions offered by asymmetric cryptography) in the blockchain ecosystem are manifold.
In particular, through the use of public and private keys created using asymmetric cryptography, it is possible to uniquely identify the counterparties of a transaction within a blockchain (for example, the public keys are used in Bitcoins as unique addresses that identify their owner). Similarly, the private keys are used in digital signatures, allowing, in this way, to unequivocally establish the ownership of the assets exchanged in a transaction.
