The key distribution problem for asymmetric encryption is therefore reduced to assuring the safety of only the private key. However, there remains a problem to be solved: how can we ensure that the public key we are using to guarantee the confidentiality of communications actually belongs to the recipient of our messages and not to an intruder, who could intercept our communication? To this end, a trusted third party is normally introduced who assumes the role of authority in ensuring the authenticity of the public key and its ownership to an identified subject.
