In order to support the cultural shift required to apply TPS and spread it through the company successfully, we needed to make changes to the organization, to roles and activities managed by its members; we had to give a strategic role to the group leaders (GLs).
Toyota faced heavy confrontations with Japanese labour unions from the end of the ’60s to the beginning of the ’70s. The clashes between management and unions caused strikes and production freezes.
