Globalisation
Globalisation is a good subject to start a book on the contemporary environment for the worlds of employment and work. While difficult to define precisely, we can nonetheless state with confidence that, over recent decades, the trend towards greater globalisation has had profound effects, both direct and indirect, on many aspects of working life. Moreover, while aspects of globalisation are the subject of much criticism, it is difficult to envisage a significant reversal in the trend occurring soon. A slowing down of the rate at which our economic system is globalising may be possible, but the broad direction of travel, at least for most countries, looks fairly well set.
