In this chapter we are going to explore labour productivity. This is a subject that is likely to become more and more significant for employing organisations in the future, and particularly in the UK where recent years have seen poor performance in this area when seen from a national economic standpoint. We will start by explaining what exactly is meant by the term ‘labour productivity’ and summarise some of the debates about why the UK has not been becoming more productive of late.
