The Hangout
I HAVE A CONFESSION to make to you. When I first heard about Facebook I thought it was the dumbest thing that had come from the Internet since Al Gore invented it. A friend told me about it and described it to me as a cool place to reconnect with people I went to high school with. I hated the people I went to high school with. Why on earth would I want to reconnect with them today?
I admit I was wrong to judge it so early. Facebook has become a force to be reckoned with. Heck, 600 million people can't be wrong, right? Of those 600 million people there's a pretty darn good chance your audience is in there somewhere. Your brand must have a presence there.
As your brand grows, people will want to connect with you on Facebook. Most will start by sending you a friend request. That's great except that Facebook limits the number of friends you have to 5,000. The good news is there is no limit to the number of people that can connect with you on your fan page.
As I mentioned in Chapter 17, “Welcome to the Social Parade,” social media is all about engagement. If every post on your fan page is news or a promotion, you are doing it wrong. You want it to be a place where people can interact with you.
A hundred fully engaged fans are better than a thousand unengaged fans.
Be informal with your updates and conversations. That's why people are there. No one uses Facebook to have promotions pushed on them. Remember that people don't care about your business; they care about themselves. ...
