Examining how performance plans help stimulate employee commitment
Managing by plan is one of the fundamentals for effective coaching that drives results. Simply, a plan sets a course of action. More specifically, a performance plan provides direction for the employee to meet expectations and develop their skills, knowledge, and abilities to grow in their position and career. A well-conceived plan helps the employee focus on the right things, stay involved and invested in high performance, and accountable to sticking to the plan. In short, a good plan reinforces the five pillars of commitment (see Chapter 4).
This chapter illustrates the importance of planning in satisfying both the organization and the employee, why plans often don’t work, guidelines for developing a plan that people follow, and some examples to help you build a plan of your own.
