Developing your employees is central to managing as a coach. Doer managers (refer to Chapter 2) tend not to put much emphasis in this area — you do your job; I’ll do mine.
Under the coach approach, developing employees is an important part of how time is spent at work. It’s about strengthening and growing employees’ skills, knowledge, and abilities so they’re engaged, committed, and motivated to their own success. You’re emphasizing how job performance and career development complement each other. If the employee is developed to perform at greater levels of skill and capacity, then they’re better positioned to advance in their career.
